I Forgive You

Parents are supposed to be our gatekeepers, our safe havens. Parents mean “home” and family dinners and vacations, security.

(Excerpt from: Soul Searching for Peace 2006)

I loved and despised them in my youth. Today I have learned to simply love and accept them for who they are/were, for doing the best they knew how, for teaching me through pain and disappointment

without even realizing it

they taught me that we all can fail, and when we fail, we learn to do the best we can with the knowledge, wisdom and desires we have been given.

They were dysfunctional, violent, self-destructive, tormented beings, the best teachers that I could have been given.

They both instilled a deep desire in me to achieve more and do better in my life.

My parents; Bi-Racial and Bi-Cultural, chose to give life to my sisters and I and we are grateful. Grateful for the chance to claim and embrace both Italian and Puerto Rican cultures that are so beautiful, and also for the deep rooted, hot-blooded, angry persons they created πŸ˜‰

Thank You Mommy –

Gracias Papi –

For the smiles and laughter of yesterday that we did have and I forgot.

For the pain and anger of yesterday that we most definitely had and I remembered.

I love you for giving me life and choosing to hang in there the only way you knew how.

Today, I understand and……….

I Forgive You πŸ’š
