Salomé y Gonzalo

“I dreamt with you last night. Your hair was free and swaying with your every step, you embraced my waist and I reached to caress your face as your beard danced upon my fingertips. I caught my breath midway, afraid that if I released it, you would disappear, like a whisper in the wind.”

Part 1 – {excerpt from Salome y Gonzalo – the package}

The bright sunlight slipped in through the rose colored shear curtains as Salomé lifted her right hand to shield her eyes and with the left, threw a pillow towards the window. She sighed very loudly and turned face down on the five remaining pillows all the while cursing the birth of this new day. “How can life continue on when my soul is dead?” she cried out, to no one.

Without trying to fight the desire to “do it tomorrow,” Salomè got up and headed straight to the shower, she dressed in her favorite flowy black skirt, White linen shirt with three quarter inch sleeves and no buttons, and her favorite day to day large black cotton scarf. Salome’s make-up regime consisted of Mary Kay foundation, loose powder, mascara and a mocha-swill color lipstick. She pulled her long black hair into a tight ponytail and of course, without fail, The Hoop Earrings.

Downstairs she went, towards the front door before realizing, that she forgot the package, sighing deeply which is something she found herself doing these past, long months. She then turned towards the living room and froze, right in the doorway, tears brimming from her eyes, she took a long, deep breath and wiped her eyes, gently, as to not smudge her freshly applied mascara. She took three steps in and was about to turn and run but, she held her ground and whispered “don’t run you stupid woman, handle your business!” Salome, grabbed the package and paused, looked around at her beautifully decorated living room, and smiled as the happy memories danced across her thoughts.

Outside, the sun was bright and hot, the birds chirped and the bees hummed yet, Salomè felt, listened nor cared for any of it. She reached for the car keys to her newly purchased Hunter Green Jeep Gladiator, hit the alarm and placed the package in the passenger seat, placed her over-sized bag alongside it, walked around the jeep, got in and reached for her sunglasses, pushed her favorite “Sin Banderas” CD in the player and pulled off.

Salomè found that driving down the highway at this early hour was sweet, it made her moment a little bearable. The duo’s voice was very soothing to her as it flowed through the speakers, transporting her to another place, a safe space, a time of sweetness and hope. This was kind of ironic, because she no longer believed in HOPE – JOY – HAPPINESS. She drove on thinking of nothing, just listening to the music and watching the road, this is exactly what she wanted.

Two and a half hours, and a pack of cigarettes later, she arrived. The parking lot was deserted, no cars, no people smiling, waving or singing ” Good Morning” and all that bullshit, just her and her emotions. She drove to a spot at the end of the lot and parked, grabbed her bag and the package and slowly walked towards the pathway leading into what she believed resembled the enchanted forest she had read about in her childhood books. As she entered her magical place the image of Gonzalo sneaked into her thoughts and she embraced herself, for every memory of this place was besides him. As she slowly walked the path she relived the moments with Gonzalo, she didn’t feel right being here without him, her thoughts went running, “how could he leave her? Abandoning her in the midst of building their lives” clutching her stomach, she fell to her knees while screaming to the wind, “why Gonzalo? WHY?

She cried, again she cried for a love that was gone. She cried for her heart that shattered into a million pieces. She cried and cried for 45 minutes until her throat dried out and her soul grew weak, she cried until she could cry no more.
